Guwahati: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass has ordered the immediate removal of 12 retired officers and employees serving on contractual assignments. The official order, issued by the Assembly Secretariat on May 29, concludes their tenure across various branches of the legislative body.

The affected personnel held roles including Officers on Special Duty, coordinators, attendants, and support staff. They were stationed across several departments such as the Public Undertakings Committee, the MLA Hostel, and the Legislation, Establishment, and Security branches.

This move marks the beginning of a broader administrative restructuring under the newly elected Speaker. The decision follows intense public scrutiny regarding hiring practices at the Secretariat. The All Assam Unemployed Association recently filed a Public Interest Litigation with the Gauhati High Court, challenging the legitimacy of nearly 50 appointments made during the term of former Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

The legal petition alleges that 34 candidates were hired for Grade III and Grade IV positions without public advertising or transparent selection processes. It also highlights concerns over the repeated service extensions granted to senior officials, including former Secretary Dulal Pegu. While the Secretariat has not linked these terminations directly to the ongoing litigation, the dismissal is widely seen as an initial step toward addressing concerns regarding recruitment and service irregularities.
