Guwahati: Assam Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika has issued a stern warning to department officials regarding delays in seed distribution. During a review meeting on June 14, Hazarika declared that any lapses in delivering seeds to farmers will face firm consequences, potentially including criminal proceedings against those found responsible.

Hazarika emphasized that the government is shifting focus toward modern, technology-driven agricultural methods to improve state productivity. He encouraged diversifying crops by expanding fruit and vegetable cultivation alongside traditional paddy farming. As part of this push, the state plans to distribute 50 lakh fruit saplings, including 200 litchi saplings for farmers in Tezpur, following a successful export of 500 kilograms of litchi to Singapore.

To ensure better results, the minister instructed officials to align seed varieties with local soil conditions. Hazarika also addressed administrative standards, requiring employees to arrive at work by 9:30 am and increasing field-level engagement. He stated, "My approach places emphasis on accelerated implementation and field-based execution."

The department is currently working to increase the number of registered farmers from 24 lakh to 40 lakh to broaden the reach of government welfare schemes like PM-KISAN. Hazarika plans to begin personal visits to agricultural sites across the state starting in early July to monitor progress and verify that support reaches the intended beneficiaries.
