Assam AG outlines reasons behind Shyamkanu Mahanta bail denial

Guwahati: Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia confirmed on May 29 that the court denied bail to Shyamkanu Mahanta due to significant concerns regarding the integrity of the ongoing investigation. The prosecution successfully argued that releasing Mahanta could lead him to abscond or interfere with those involved in the case.

During the hearing, the state highlighted evidence suggesting that Mahanta allegedly instructed an individual named Amritprabha on how to testify, which the court identified as a clear risk of witness tampering. Saikia emphasized that the government has adopted a robust legal strategy, noting that the prosecution has been meticulous in selecting witnesses to ensure the case remains strong.

Addressing criticism regarding the handling of the investigation, Saikia rejected claims of negligence or procedural delays. He maintained that the state is operating with a clear, coordinated strategy and that all findings have been presented to the court for objective review. Regarding questions about why certain individuals were excluded as accused, the Advocate General stated that the prosecution based its assessment on firm evidence and intends to let the court determine the final findings of guilt or innocence.
