Guwahati: Assam’s Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested Lachit Kumar Das, an Additional Director of Land Records, for allegedly accepting a bribe. The arrest took place on May 21 at his office in Rupnagar, Guwahati, after he was caught red-handed accepting Rs 45,000. The complainant had initially sought help from the agency after Das demanded a total of Rs 1 lakh to issue a No Objection Certificate for a land sale.

Following the arrest, investigators launched a series of raids on properties linked to the officer. An initial search at his residence in the Queen Garden Apartment in Beltola resulted in the recovery of Rs 48.38 lakh in cash from a locker. The team also seized over half a kilogram of gold, fixed deposit certificates worth Rs 80 lakh, and various property and bank documents belonging to the officer and his family.

A subsequent search operation conducted on May 22 at a second house in the same area uncovered an additional Rs 1.18 crore in cash, along with further land-related records. Authorities are now scrutinizing the recovered documents and financial assets as part of their ongoing investigation. Das remains in custody, and a formal case has been registered against him under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
