Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has launched an ambitious new initiative titled Arunachal Kiwi: The USP of Arunachal Pradesh to establish the state as a major global player in the organic fruit industry. Backed by a budget of approximately ₹167 crore, the mission aims to transform the local kiwi sector by providing end-to-end support for farmers and improving the entire value chain.
As India's largest kiwi-producing state, Arunachal Pradesh contributes more than 50 percent of the national output. Key cultivation zones include the districts of Lower Subansiri, West Kameng, Shi Yomi, and Dibang Valley, where the climate and soil are ideal for producing high-quality organic fruit. The mission intends to leverage these natural advantages to bridge gaps in cultivation, post-harvest handling, and international marketing.
The project uses a collaborative approach involving multiple central ministries, including the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and the Ministry of Agriculture. The government plans to invest in high-density orchards, modern pack houses, and pre-cooling facilities. Efforts will also focus on securing GI tagging and organic certification to build a unified Arunachal Organic Kiwi brand for export to markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
Beyond farming, the initiative seeks to integrate agri-tourism into the state's economy. By developing tourism circuits in Ziro, Dirang, and Menchuka, officials hope to showcase kiwi orchards as part of a sustainable portfolio. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein noted that this project aligns with the national Act East Policy, positioning the Northeast as a central hub for high-value organic horticulture.
