Itanagar: The government of Arunachal Pradesh has officially prohibited the use of all tobacco products within state hospitals and healthcare institutions. The directive, which took effect on May 19, applies to both public and private facilities, ranging from primary health centers and community clinics to large medical colleges.

This ban covers every part of a hospital campus, including buildings, administrative offices, parking lots, corridors, and gardens. Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Pawan Kumar Sain issued the order under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act of 2003. The policy forbids all forms of consumption, such as smoking, chewing gutkha, or using tobacco mixed with lime.

To enforce the new rules, institutions must install prominent signs at entry points and throughout the premises labeling them as tobacco-free zones. Facilities are also required to provide collection boxes at gates for visitors to deposit tobacco items before entering. Medical superintendents and heads of institutions are tasked with appointing monitors to oversee compliance and report any violations.

The state health department noted that the initiative aims to minimize the dangers of second-hand smoke and improve overall wellness in medical settings. While smoking areas are no longer permitted on campuses, the government is offering support to those looking to quit through tobacco cessation counseling services available at district hospitals and medical colleges.
