Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K.T. Parnaik (Retd) met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi this week to discuss pressing concerns regarding state security, the narcotics trade, and economic development. The meeting covered the current law and order situation, specifically focusing on internal security and the management of sensitive border regions.
A primary point of the discussion was the strategic Tirap, Changlang, and Longding region. Governor Parnaik outlined ongoing initiatives to bolster border security, which include expanded surveillance mechanisms and the installation of new fencing projects. The Governor expressed serious concern over the rise of drug trafficking, noting that narcotics flowing through international borders and neighbouring states pose a direct threat to social stability.
Parnaik advocated for a coordinated response from all relevant agencies to curb substance abuse and protect the youth. He suggested that geospatial technology could serve as a powerful tool in these efforts, helping authorities track drug movement and manage infrastructure more efficiently. The Governor stated that such expertise could create new jobs in surveying and data-based governance, saying, "such expertise could generate employment opportunities in sectors such as surveying, land administration, infrastructure monitoring, disaster response and data-based governance."
Beyond security, the discussion shifted to the growth of the cooperative sector within the state. Parnaik informed the Home Minister that strengthening cooperative institutions is essential for empowering rural entrepreneurs, women, and farmers. He emphasised that a more robust cooperative ecosystem would foster inclusive economic growth, enhance individual incomes, and assist in building self-reliant village economies across Arunachal Pradesh.
