Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reached out to his Assam counterpart to address the arrest and alleged custodial mistreatment of anti-drug activist Gumin Mize. Khandu described images and reports circulating on social media regarding the activist's experience in jail as unfortunate and urged authorities to conduct a serious examination of the situation.
Mize was taken into custody while visiting an Assam border town to pursue his ongoing work against drug mafias and narcotics trafficking. The situation has sparked widespread public outcry in Arunachal Pradesh. While the Chief Minister emphasized that his government cannot legally interfere in the judicial processes of another state, he chose to intervene due to his respect for Mize's dedication to curbing drug-related crimes.
The controversy follows a formal complaint lodged with the National Human Rights Commission by Buteng Tayeng. The petition alleges that police officers at the Bihpuria Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district subjected Mize to physical assault, verbal abuse, and a denial of necessary medical care while he was held in custody.
