Itanagar: Retired architect and cultural activist Techi Gubin of Arunachal Pradesh will receive the Padma Shri from President Droupadi Murmu on Monday. The award honors his three decades of professional work in architecture alongside his significant contributions to border outreach and the preservation of indigenous culture.
Born in 1964, Gubin graduated from the Chandigarh College of Architecture in 1988. He spent his professional career with the Arunachal Pradesh Public Works Department, eventually retiring as the state's Chief Architect. His tenure included a notable period as a development officer for HUDCO from 2000 to 2005.
Beyond his architectural career, Gubin has been a dedicated social worker. He currently serves as vice president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram and previously led the Nyishi Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society to promote the Donyi-Polo heritage. His activism also extended to the arts, as he was associated with the award-winning regional film Oyaa.
Gubin is recognized for his efforts to support remote border communities near China, Myanmar, and Bhutan. Through his Seemant Darshan Yatras in 2010 and 2021, he visited isolated villages to evaluate infrastructure and security needs, later presenting his findings to national leaders to advocate for regional development.
