Gangtok: An Army jawan died Monday after his raft flipped in the Teesta River. The accident occurred during an annual training exercise in Sikkim’s Pakyong district. A raft hit the remains of a bridge and capsized. The structure was debris from floods in 2023.

The force of the river swept the soldier away. A senior officer confirmed the details on Tuesday. "The incident took place on Monday during an annual rafting training programme when the raft collided with a damaged bridge structure and capsized, sweeping the jawan away," the officer said.

Search teams from the Army and the Teesta Rescue Centre scrambled to find the missing man. They eventually recovered his body downstream at Tar Khola in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal. Officials sent the remains for a post-mortem examination.

The victim was Lance Naik Rajasekhar of the 191 Artillery Regiment. The ill-fated training run took place between Bardang and Rangpo Mining.
