Agartala: Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that the central government will launch pilot projects for a smart border management system at several locations across India next year. The initiative aims to enhance national security by integrating technology-driven surveillance with deeper coordination between border forces and local administration.
Addressing Border Security Force personnel in Tripura, Shah explained that the framework relies on four pillars: advanced technology, intelligence gathering, local administrative involvement, and the operational strength of forces like the BSF and Sashastra Seema Bal. He noted that the government is finalizing the strategy to address diverse threats, including narcotics trafficking, human smuggling, and drone-based illicit activities. “The proposed model would be built around a four-point security framework involving technology, local administration, intelligence inputs, and the operational capabilities of border-guarding forces,” he said.
The ministry plans to involve district magistrates, police superintendents, and village representatives in the new security structure to ensure a comprehensive approach. Before the pilot phase begins, senior officials including the Union Home Secretary and the BSF Director General will conduct field visits to gather feedback from frontline personnel. Alongside these security updates, the government is modernizing aging infrastructure, with plans to replace over 650 kilometers of old border fencing.
Shah also addressed the welfare of border personnel, highlighting improvements in outpost electrification and clean water access. He emphasized that secure borders are essential to the national goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Additionally, the Home Minister shared that the Central Armed Police Forces have committed to large-scale environmental efforts, having planted over six crore trees since 2019.
