Guwahati: Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi tore into the Assam Budget 2026-27 on Friday. He accused the state government of failing to provide a single rupee to combat the state's chronic flood and erosion problems. He warned the state's debt is spiraling out of control.
Gogoi called the budget a summary statement rather than a roadmap for growth. He pointed to a total liability of Rs 1,96,000 crore. "The biggest problem in Assam is floods and erosion. Not even a single rupee has been allocated in the budget to address this problem," he said.
The legislator also targeted the government for ignoring village industries and employment. He argued that the spending plan lacks support for MSMEs. Instead of driving progress, he claimed the budget promotes laziness and fails to create real jobs for residents.
Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah defended the document. He argued the state is moving from years of instability toward decisive development. He wants a knowledge-driven economy focused on regional growth.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted ongoing support for the agricultural sector. He pointed to new procurement schemes for maize and mustard. He also cited dairy subsidies and aid for tea garden workers as proof of the government's commitment to the people.
