Guwahati: Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi took aim at Arunachal Pradesh hydropower projects on Wednesday. He claims these dams turn Assam’s annual flood season into a full-blown disaster. The legislator spoke during the state Budget Session at the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Gogoi insists that dam operators dump water without warning. This leaves downstream communities vulnerable to sudden surges and land loss. He spent seven years leading public protests to stall the construction of these sites. Work halted for a long time. It restarted only after the BJP took control of the government.
He fears the consequences for both upper and lower regions of the state. "As these dams are being built, sudden releases of water are, in our view, worsening floods and erosion in Assam, particularly in the upper and lower parts of the state," Gogoi said.
State officials remained silent. Neither the BJP nor the governments of Assam or Arunachal Pradesh offered a response to the accusations. Gogoi maintains that the current infrastructure plan is a direct threat to the safety of the people.
