Akashvani Kohima Celebrates 90 Years of Indian Broadcasting with Marathon

Kohima: Akashvani Kohima hosted a marathon on Friday, May 8, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of radio broadcasting in India. The event, which promoted physical fitness, community engagement, and national unity, saw the participation of approximately 180 students from six government schools alongside station staff members.

The race commenced at Old MLA Hostel Junction, where it was flagged off by B Henok Buchem, and concluded at High School Junction. During the proceedings, Buchem remarked that the marathon serves as a powerful symbol of the long, transformative journey of Indian broadcasting, noting how radio has successfully delivered news, music, and stories to millions of listeners for decades.

Kethosituo Sekhose emphasized the enduring relevance of radio as a vital information source, particularly in rural regions, highlighting its unique ability to bridge gaps between different generations and communities. According to Programme Executive Khriesaneisa Rutsa, Akashvani Kohima marked 63 years of local service this past January. The station currently maintains a diverse schedule featuring over 55 programs across its primary and FM channels and has been hosting commemorative activities since June 2025 to mark the national milestone.
