Guwahati: Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad gathered in Dibrugarh on Monday. They held a three-hour sit-in demonstration to force the Central government into action. The protesters want official recognition of Assam’s annual flooding and erosion as a national disaster.
The group submitted a memorandum listing four specific demands. They want a permanent, scientifically backed plan to stop the destruction. Farmers need relief too. The AJYCP is calling for a total waiver of agricultural loans for those devastated by the water. They also want proper compensation for families who lost their homes or land to the river.
An AJYCP representative argued the crisis hits lakhs of people every year. The current compensation packages fall short for those who lose their livelihoods to erosion. The group has pressed this issue for years without getting a real response from Delhi.
The protest marks the latest step in a long campaign. The leadership is now waiting for a signal from the Centre. An AJYCP leader said, "We will watch how the government responds to our memorandum. If there is no movement on our demands, we will decide on the next course of action."
