Guwahati: Badruddin Ajmal led a team of AIUDF leaders to the Chief Minister’s office in Guwahati on Wednesday. They carried a list of grievances. Top of the list: the state’s new Uniform Civil Code.
The delegation included lawmakers Mazibur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam, and Ashraful Hussain. They told Himanta Biswa Sarma that the law threatens religious freedom. They argue the code stomps on personal laws and traditions central to the Muslim community. The party claims the move ignores constitutional protections for minorities found in Articles 25 and 26.
The AIUDF insists the government failed to hear out the people. They want a total redo of the legislation. The party urged the state government to "undertake a comprehensive review of the legislation after holding consultations with all stakeholders and communities likely to be affected by its implementation."
The group also cited Articles 29 and 30. These sections protect cultural and educational rights. They walked out of the office still pushing for a rollback. It remains to be seen if the Chief Minister will pivot.
