Guwahati: Members of the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam swarmed Dibrugarh on Monday. They marched to the District Commissioner’s office to demand Scheduled Tribe status and better pay for tea workers. The group wants the government to stop stalling on its old campaign promises.

Protesters want the current daily wage of Rs 280 bumped up to Rs 551. They also pushed for land pattas for families living across tea gardens and rural sectors. The crowd shouted slogans before handing a formal memorandum to local officials for delivery to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

An AASAA representative spoke to the crowd during the demonstration. "Our people have worked in Assam’s tea gardens for generations. ST status, fair wages and land rights remain our core demands. We are here to remind the government of these commitments made before the elections," he said. The group expects a swift response to these long-standing issues.
