Shillong: The Joint Action Committee on Wednesday intensified its opposition to the Shillong Peak Ropeway Project. They demanded the state revoke the appointment decrees, known as sanads, held by local shnong leaders. These leaders allegedly leased the Shillong Viewpoint to the government without any legal standing.
Committee members started their day at the homes of the Riat Laban Dorbar Pyllun president and secretary. They pressured the duo to scrap the lease agreement. The delegation followed up with a visit to Ainam Manik Syiem, the Syiem of Hima Mylliem, to formally request the cancellation of the officials' sanads.
JAC president Deborah Marbaniang claimed the leadership failed the community. "These shnong leaders have betrayed the residents of Riat Laban Dorbar Pyllun. We have demanded that the Syiem cancel their sanads," Marbaniang said. She insisted the decrees only define the leaders as custodians, not as owners with the power to auction or lease public land.
The JAC reports that the Riat Laban Dorbar Pyllun leadership previously promised to void the deal. No formal documentation has surfaced yet. The committee spent Wednesday waiting for a written assurance after a scheduled meeting of the local leaders. Marbaniang warned that the JAC will continue to fight if the government persists with the ropeway project against the will of the local residents.
