Kohima: The District Integrated Strategy for HIV/AIDS (DISHA) in Mon, alongside the Aboi Town Baptist Church Youth Ministry, TI NNP+ Aboi, and RRC Government Polytechnic Aboi, recently observed the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2026. Supported by the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society, the event took place at Aboi Town Baptist Church under the theme Light the Legacy: Remember. Advance. Act.
DPO for DISHA Mon, Longyim Tzudir, explained that the global observance, held every third Sunday of May, serves to honor those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses while renewing a societal commitment to support individuals living with HIV. Tzudir emphasized that the theme encourages communities to remember past pioneers, advance medical progress and human rights, and act collectively to eliminate the epidemic by the year 2030.
EAC Aboi, M. Khenpa, addressed the assembly by highlighting the concerning persistence of high HIV prevalence rates in the region. He pointed out that lingering shame and hesitation surrounding the topic, even within schools, families, and churches, represent significant barriers to progress. Khenpa urged participants to normalize open dialogue about HIV and AIDS, encouraging them to share their knowledge within their local communities to help dismantle stigma and improve preventative awareness.
The memorial featured a moving candlelight vigil accompanied by the song Go Light the World, performed by E. Shamo K and friends. Associate Pastor Bonom SL Konyak led a special prayer, and the event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Wanmei, the program manager of TI NNP+ Aboi. During the service, attendees were reminded to honor the legacy of medical personnel and NGO workers who dedicated their lives to supporting those affected by the virus.
