Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union is demanding a formal investigation into the death of a college student in Guwahati after a rotted tree fell onto her scooter on Friday. Parismita Hazarika was traveling toward Pandu College with fellow student Jyotirmoy Mohan when the tree collapsed in the Bhootnath-Kalipur area.

Hazarika died from the impact, while Mohan sustained injuries. He is currently receiving medical care at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Local authorities have begun a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

AASU president Utpal Sarma criticized the lack of maintenance by the Railway authorities and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. He argued that the dead tree posed a known risk that officials failed to address. "Society cannot and should not treat the death of Parismita Hazarika as a mere accident. Calling it an unfortunate incident alone would be an injustice. This is the tragic consequence of the extreme negligence of certain irresponsible officials and employees," Sarma said.

The student union is pushing for accountability and appropriate compensation for Hazarika’s family. Additionally, the group is calling for financial and medical support to cover the recovery costs for the injured student.
