5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Northeast India After Bhutan Tremor

Shillong: A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Punakha, Bhutan, late Sunday night, sending noticeable tremors across Shillong, Guwahati, and other areas of Northeast India. The event occurred at 11:06 pm at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres.

Residents in cities including Dibrugarh and parts of Arunachal Pradesh felt the ground shake, which caused buildings to sway for several seconds. The movement prompted many people to flee their homes and seek safety in open areas.

The National Centre for Seismology monitored the event, while local authorities confirmed that there are no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage. Geological experts advised citizens to stay alert, noting that "mild aftershocks are common following any shallow event in the Himalayan seismic belt." Officials continue to assess the situation across the region.
