Guwahati: A series of unexplained deaths and criminal investigations has swept across Assam. In Dhubri, the decomposed body of journalist Papu Jyotishi was pulled from the Gangadhar River on June 9. The former Golakganj Press Club president had been missing since June 7. Police confirmed his identity using a press card found in his shirt pocket. "The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem examination report is received. A detailed investigation has been initiated from all possible angles," said a police official.
Meanwhile, Guwahati police are handling multiple fatalities. Dipamoni Hira, a 26-year-old constable at Panikhaiti Police Station, was found dead in her rented home on June 21 after her husband raised the alarm. Authorities recovered a note at the scene. In the Hatigaon area, Sushmita Basumatary was found dead in her rented room on June 10, leading to the arrest of her boyfriend, Akash Prasad. Another Hatigaon resident, Biswajit Buragohain, an assistant to an Assam Civil Service officer, was found dead at House No. 3 on Sewali Path. Investigators believe he died two days before the discovery.
Elsewhere, a youth remains unidentified after his body was discovered at a playground in Nagaon’s Juria on June 5. In the Garbhanga Reserved Forest, search teams recovered the body of 25-year-old Nikhil Jha on July 13. Jha, a Fatasil resident, disappeared while swimming with friends Devesh Asopa, Padam Asopa, and Aman Chettri. Farther afield, CRPF jawan Amarendra Ray from Bongaigaon’s Manikpur was found dead at Kota Junction in Rajasthan on July 11 after vanishing from a train route earlier that month.
Environmental officials in Boko are investigating the death of a seven-year-old wild elephant near Nampathar Reserved Forest. Electrocution is suspected. In separate operations, Guwahati police intercepted 38 kilograms of smuggled gold, valued at Rs 54 crore, in Kharghuli. Officers arrested Akshay Bansure, who allegedly has ties to an international smuggling network. Police also seized four mobile phones and Rs 3,700 in cash. Finally, city police raided the S&D Parlour on Zoo Road following tips about illegal activities, detaining nine women and seizing various items for examination.
