Shillong: Residents of Ward No. 3 in Jhalupara are struggling with a severe water crisis. Taps run for only 30 to 40 minutes once a day. This has dragged on for nearly two weeks. The supply dropped to zero for a full week prior to this partial restoration.
Locals say the trouble is systemic. "Water supply is frequent in this ward as it is disrupted in every few months," one resident said. They have notified the Shillong Cantonment Board, but the taps stay dry most of the day.
Civic life is crumbling across the Cantonment area. Traffic congestion and illegal parking clog the streets, especially on Sundays. Shopkeepers block foot traffic by dumping goods onto the roads. Waste collection remains spotty and infrequent. Trash piles up in public view all day.
Roads show the same neglect. Deep potholes pockmark the asphalt, remaining unrepaired for months. Residents are still waiting on new Building Bye-Laws that have been delayed for years. They want the Cantonment authorities to stop the decline of basic services immediately.
