Watchdog Alleges Nine Crore Rupee Ghost Project Scam in Garo Hills

Shillong: The Niksamso Garo Community Organization exposed a nine-crore rupee scam within the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council. Officials allegedly siphoned 15th Finance Commission cash meant for remote villages. The work never happened. Skeletal remains of projects are all that survive in the South, West, and North Garo Hills.

The group used RTI data and field inspections to track the missing money from the 2021-22 period. Records claim the money was spent, but the infrastructure is missing. Authorities failed to explain these gaps when questioned last year.

“RTI reports revealed cases where funds were cleared under the names of villages that either did not receive the works or whose names were not properly recorded,” the organization stated. The group now plans to petition the Central Government for an independent audit.

They want a full probe into every project funded by the 15th Finance Commission. They also demand legal action against any contractors or officials caught in the net. The group insists that all stolen money must return to the public coffer.
