Shillong: Residents of Okchokgre, Sindilgre, and Kimdigre are thirsty. The Jal Jeevan Mission project arrived in the Salmanpara constituency with pipes and promises. Now, those same pipes lie in pieces.
Water stopped flowing a long time ago. The infrastructure fell into disrepair, leaving households in the South West Garo Hills district dry. Local families blame the government and the officials responsible for oversight.
Salibirth Sangma, a resident of Okchokgre, confirmed the community repeatedly sent letters to the Public Health Engineering Department and the Sub-Divisional Officer. Nothing happened. "Ia kapenggimin dam ru·uta salrangna skangan nosto ong·atako man·enba, songo songdonggipa nokantiona chi jokna man·jaha," Sangma said.
The village remains ignored. Officials have failed to fix the damage or restore the water supply. Locals now demand the department act fast to repair the system and deliver the water they were promised.
