Imphal: Manipur's week-long Van Mahotsav 2026 campaign is gaining serious speed. Forest officials, students, and local volunteers are digging in across Thoubal, Tengnoupal, Chandel, and Ukhrul to get thousands of new trees into the ground.
In Thoubal, teams hit Tekcham, Tentha, and Langmeithet. Under the watch of DFO Dr. Leishangthem Jeeceelee, 150 volunteers planted over 1,000 saplings. The work doesn't stop there. Tengnoupal officials report 58,900 saplings planted since July 1. They are closing in on a 110,000 tree goal.
DCF Mahamuda Begum led a massive effort at Saivom Village. They pulled in village authorities and women's groups. Teams also planted greenery at 3 and 36 Assam Rifles camps. The department is now handing out free saplings to anyone who wants one. They even added a incentive program. High survival rates will lead to district and state-level awards.
Chandel district took a different approach. They hit the schools. At St. Paul's Higher Secondary School, 380 students planted 550 saplings. DFO Dr. N. Munal Meitei watched the work closely. He told the crowd, "Protecting forests is a shared responsibility and urged students to take an active role in conserving the environment." More than 600 additional trees went into the ground at S.S. Mohring School and 46 Assam Rifles camps.
Ukhrul focused on the Chinese pangolin. ENFOGAL and the Greenland Youth Society teamed up for a drive under the theme "Plant a Tree for Pangolin." They want to stop habitat loss. Community members spent the day learning about the risks of wildlife trafficking. They finished the event with a pledge to keep the local forests safe.
