USTM and Meghalaya Pollution Control Board Host World Environment Day Event

Shillong: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) partnered with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) and the state government to mark World Environment Day 2026. The event featured a tree-planting campaign on the USTM campus held under the nationwide Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative. MSPCB officials selected the university as a primary location for the drive, which saw faculty and students planting saplings to support ecological conservation.

A seminar followed the plantation activity, featuring experts from the MSPCB and academic leadership. In his keynote address, Dr. G. H. Chyrmang, Member Secretary of the MSPCB, emphasized the necessity of community involvement. He stated, "highlighted the importance of collective action in tackling environmental degradation and stressed the need for stronger public participation in conservation efforts."

Technical sessions covered a variety of environmental topics, including air quality reports for Byrnihat and the rollout of the National Clean Air Programme. Officials from the MSPCB also addressed industrial emission standards, solid waste management, and protocols for handling biomedical waste. The day concluded with a presentation by Rituraj Phukan of the Indigenous Peoples’ Climate Justice Forum, who urged stakeholders to adopt development models that prioritize social inclusivity and environmental health.
