Shillong: The United Democratic Party is set to name senior lawyer V.G.K. Kynta as its candidate for the upcoming by-election for the vacant Shillong Parliamentary seat. The party will make the official announcement this Thursday.
Party leaders finalized the decision weeks ago but held off on the public reveal to consult with the Regional Democratic Alliance, which includes the UDP and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party. Following a meeting on Monday, the alliance formally endorsed Kynta as their common candidate.
This development adds to a crowded field for the by-election. Kynta will face candidates including Batskhem Myrboh of the VPP, D.R.L. Nonglait of the NPP, and Vincent H. Pala of the Congress. The BJP also plans to enter the race, with nine internal aspirants currently seeking the party ticket.
The UDP hopes for a stronger showing after its previous candidate, Robertjune Kharjahrin, placed fourth in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections behind the winner Ricky A.J. Syngkon, Vincent H. Pala, and Ampareen Lyngdoh.
