Shillong: Unidentified attackers torched a postal vehicle on the Yaingangpokpi-Litan Road in Manipur on Monday. The fire consumed 35 bags of mail containing passports, ATM cards, and personal documents. Ukhrul Sub-Post Office Postmaster Wungreipam Rimai confirmed the destruction. Thirty bags were headed for Ukhrul, four for Somdal, and one for Kamjong.
"The Department of Posts is assessing the extent of the damage and taking necessary steps to restore services and assist the affected customers," Rimai said. The postmaster has reported the incident to law enforcement.
A mob enforcing a blockade on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway stopped the convoy near Shangkai Kuki village on July 27. The complainant stated that armed men boarded the vehicle and forced him to drive at gunpoint. They pressed a weapon against his leg to keep him silent while speaking to security forces on duty. Police have registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The Tangkhul Naga Long reported that Kuki groups intercepted over 40 commercial vehicles at Shangkai Kuki village and Mahadev Hill. They claim these groups acted in collusion with militants under the Suspension of Operations agreement. According to the organization, items ranging from cash to groceries were looted or burned. The blockade, initiated by the Kuki CSO Working Committee, began at midnight on July 26 and has halted local essential services.
