Ukhrul Launches Massive Effort to Plant 210,000 Trees

Imphal: The Ukhrul Forest Division kicked off an aggressive afforestation campaign this week. Officials aim to plant 210,000 saplings throughout the district as part of the 77th Vana Mahotsava. This effort follows a recent push that added 247,000 seedlings to the local environment.

District leaders gathered at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School to begin the work. Deputy Commissioner Uppuluri Chaitanya and DFO Laishram Gitla joined students and teachers to put shovels in the dirt. Gitla said the campaign serves a broader goal. He noted that the drive is part of a strategy to restore degraded land, save water, and improve climate resilience.

Officials also visited Shokvao Village, a site managed by the Community-based Sustainable Forest Management for Water Resources project. Workers installed a camera trap there to track wildlife. Gitla confirmed plans to place these cameras in 23 project villages to watch over local biodiversity. "Sustained public involvement remains central to the district’s environmental conservation efforts," Gitla said.

Work spans the entire district. Coordinated planting teams hit ranges in Awang Kasom, Khalhang Khullen, Jessami, and Wahong. The forest department plans to hand out more saplings to households and schools in the coming weeks to keep the momentum going.
