Two suspected extortionists shot in police encounter in Assam

Guwahati: Two suspected extortionists with alleged ties to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) sustained injuries during a shootout with police in the Sivasagar district of Assam on May 25. The incident occurred at Bogidol Mola village after authorities intercepted a group attempting to collect money from a local businessman.

Businessman Lachit Gogoi had been targeted by the group for weeks, receiving an extortion demand of 8 lakh rupees. The group reportedly approached him with the same demand 15 days ago, prompting an unsuccessful police attempt to capture them at that time. When the six-member gang returned to collect the funds, they encountered a waiting police team.

The suspects opened fire on the officers, who returned shots in retaliation. Ritu Gogoi suffered five bullet wounds to his thigh and waist and was transferred to Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital for intensive care. His relative, Jitu Gogoi, sustained a bullet graze to his abdomen and is receiving treatment at Sivasagar Civil Hospital.

Four other members of the group managed to escape during the chaos. Police recovered two motorcycles and a firearm from the scene and have launched a search operation to locate the absconding individuals as the investigation remains ongoing.
