Guwahati: Nazia Sultana and Sahina Sultana drowned Tuesday morning while bathing in a village pond. The tragedy hit Daulatpur village within the jurisdiction of the Bangalmora Police Outpost in Assam’s Lakhimpur district around 10:30 am. They were just children.

Villagers started a search operation immediately after the girls disappeared. They contacted the State Disaster Response Force for help. Locals grew frustrated as the team failed to arrive quickly. Angry residents took matters into their own hands. They used fishing nets to pull the bodies from the water before the rescue team arrived.

The community is mourning. Tensions flared over the response time of the official crews. As one resident noted regarding the situation, "Villagers launched a search operation after the incident and alerted the State Disaster Response Force." Police arrived later to handle legal formalities. They sent the remains to a local facility for a post-mortem examination.
