Tuliram Ronghang Renews Call for Autonomous State in Assam Assembly

Guwahati: Dr. Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, has formally renewed the long-standing demand for the implementation of Article 244(A) of the Constitution. Speaking during his first address as an MLA in the Assam Legislative Assembly, he advocated for the creation of an autonomous state covering the Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao districts.

Ronghang emphasized that this initiative is rooted in the identity and development needs of the local people rather than simple politics. He noted that the region spans 10,434 square kilometres, a territory larger than states like Sikkim, Goa, and Tripura. The movement for this autonomy has persisted for over four decades and resulted in more than 500 deaths, while also leading over ten militant groups to lay down their arms and sign peace settlements.

Article 244(A) allows Parliament to establish an autonomous state within Assam, complete with its own legislature and council of ministers. Expressing optimism that the current state leadership will address these concerns, Ronghang called on his colleagues in the Assembly to support the cause. This push serves to bring the governance aspirations of the hill district communities back to the forefront of state political discourse.
