Northeast India eyes key role in national space economy

Guwahati: Northeast India is positioning itself as a vital gateway for the country's booming space sector. Experts gathered in Guwahati for the two-day Northeast India Space Workshop 2026 to plot a new course for regional development. The Space Industry Association of India and the North Eastern Space Applications Centre hosted the event.

The region wants more than just space technology. It wants to build it. Discussions centered on developing local capabilities in disaster management, connectivity, geospatial intelligence, and manufacturing. Dr. Subba Rao Pavuluri, SIA-India president, said, "This is more than a change of location, it is a change in perspective."

Officials are pushing for a Vision 2030 for the region. Assam could serve as the primary institutional hub. North Eastern Council Secretary Satinder Kumar Bhalla urged participants to look further, setting goals that align with India’s 2047 national trajectory. Satellite data must become actionable. Assam Science and Technology Secretary Pallav Gopal Jha emphasized that success depends on translating real-time information into ground-level results.

The geography of the Northeast is a major advantage. Dr. S.P. Agarwal, NESAC Director, noted that while the region represents only 8% of India's landmass, its strategic value is immense. "The Northeast may account for only about 8% of India's geographical area, but its strategic and natural significance is far greater," Agarwal said. Its rugged terrain makes it a perfect testing ground for disaster resilience and border security technologies.

New partnerships are underway. SIA-India, the Software Technology Parks of India, and the Assam government are launching a Centre for Space Entrepreneurship. This facility will offer startups mentorship and technical support while linking with Bengaluru's Centre of Excellence in Space Technology. SIA-India Director General Anil Prakash wants to turn local talent into global creators.

The event drew a wide range of experts. Attendees included representatives from BSNL, Hughes Communications India, Gilat Satellite Networks, KPMG India, XDLINX Space Labs, and GalaxEye. Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu is scheduled to attend the second day of the workshop to further the state-level dialogue.
