Agartala: Village Committee elections within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council are set to take place this September, ending a nearly decade-long electoral drought. Former Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma announced the development following an affidavit submitted by the Tripura State Election Commission to the Supreme Court.
The move addresses a long-standing legal battle over the democratic rights of the Tiprasa people. These committees serve as critical grassroots governance bodies for rural tribal areas, mirroring the function of panchayats in other regions. According to official records, the upcoming vote will cover 2,600 seats across 587 committees, utilizing approximately 1,550 polling stations.
Reflecting on the milestone, Debbarma highlighted the significance of the judicial outcome. "After years of legal struggle, I am glad to say that the State Election Commission has agreed to hold elections in September this year. They have mentioned it in their affidavit to the Supreme Court. This is a huge relief and victory for the people of our state. Our rights have been restored by the efforts of the people," he said.
The proposed election timeline begins with the filing of nominations between September 1 and September 8. Following a period for scrutiny and campaigning, polling is scheduled for September 27. Officials expect the entire process, including potential repolls and the final count, to conclude by October 5. Debbarma credited the resolution to his sustained legal advocacy, emphasizing that the focus must now shift to the collective welfare of indigenous communities.
