Agartala: A high-level Tripura government delegation visited the South Tripura district on Tuesday to evaluate potential sites for a new medical college. Minister for the Welfare of Minorities Sukla Charan Noatia led the team to inspect land in Debdaru and Kalsi, both located within the Jolaibari Rural Development Block.
This initiative falls under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram, a central government scheme aimed at minority development. Minister Noatia stated he previously discussed the project with Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi and received a positive response regarding the potential for a new institution in the state.
Nirmal Adhikari, Secretary of the Welfare of Minorities Department, explained the necessary approval process. He noted, "Once the district administration approves the land, the proposal will be tabled before the state-level committee for its approval. Following that, the project will be sent to the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs for final clearance."
The proposed facility is estimated to cost Rs 250 crore, with funding provided by the Ministry of Minority Affairs. Once established, the State Health Department will manage daily operations. Officials anticipate the new college will significantly improve local medical education and healthcare infrastructure, adding to the three medical institutions currently operating in Tripura.
