Agartala: The Tripura government has granted permanent employment to 18 relatives of individuals killed in political violence. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the update on Friday, confirming that an additional 11 candidates have been recommended for jobs under the state initiative.
Introduced in December 2020, the Scheme for Providing Employment to Members of Families of Persons Killed in Political Violence offers support to those impacted by civil unrest. The government originally restricted eligibility to deaths occurring before March 9, 2018, but the state cabinet later removed this date to broaden the reach of the policy.
Nath explained the vetting process, noting that a scrutiny committee reviews police reports and official inquiries to confirm the political nature of each death. "Initially, the scheme was meant to provide employment to members of families of persons killed in political violence up to March 9, 2018. Later, the state cabinet decided to amend the scheme and remove the words 'up to March 9, 2018'," Nath said.
Authorities have processed 38 total petitions to date. While 18 people have secured positions and 11 await finalization, five applications were denied due to a lack of evidence linking the deaths to political motives. Four remaining cases are still under active investigation. The minister acknowledged that the verification process is occasionally hindered by missing or inaccessible records from previous administrations, but emphasized that the government does not discriminate based on the victim's political affiliation.
