Agartala: Tripura has reached a new milestone in aquaculture, with annual fish production climbing past 94,000 metric tonnes. Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das announced the figure on June 19 following a state-level performance review, noting that output has grown steadily from 85,000 MT in recent years.

The growth stems from various state and central initiatives designed to modernize fish farming infrastructure. These efforts include creating new ponds and renovating abandoned water bodies to support local farmers. By expanding these resources, the government aims to generate more livelihoods and decrease the state's reliance on fish imports.

During the review meeting, officials examined fund utilization and established priorities for the 2026-27 financial year. The department plans to host at least two state-level meetings annually to ensure progress remains on track. Regarding the oversight process, Das stated, "We will assess our achievements, identify loopholes, evaluate how far we have been able to meet the state's fish demand and discuss any remaining gaps."

To build on this momentum, the Fisheries Department will launch district-level meetings next month. These sessions will focus on evaluating the implementation of ongoing schemes and identifying specific areas that require improvement to ensure long-term self-sufficiency.
