Agartala: Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman slammed the state government on Sunday, July 26, for tasking the police with investigating the death of DGP Anurag Dhankar. Dhankar died July 20 at the State Police Headquarters. His death remains a mystery. The state appointed an SP-rank officer to lead the inquiry, but opposition leaders insist this is insufficient.
Roy Barman and Tripura Congress President Asish Saha held a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan to demand a probe led by a sitting Tripura High Court judge. They argued the current team faces too much government pressure to act independently. "The people of Tripura and the Congress believe that the team formed by the government is just an eyewash," Roy Barman stated.
Public suspicion is growing. Roy Barman noted that a Congress delegation visiting GBP Hospital saw no obvious signs of suicide, claiming the DGP appeared to be in a deep sleep. He questioned if the investigation would address potential conflicts, such as the DGP's past actions against drug mafias or reports of public humiliation shortly before his death.
The Congress party refuses to rule out murder. They are pushing Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to switch to a judicial inquiry to ensure transparency. Roy Barman challenged the government's motives, asking why officials would avoid a High Court judge if they have nothing to hide. Ashish Kumar Saha and other party members joined the call for accountability.
