Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha met with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi to fast-track critical road projects. The leaders reviewed the progress of ongoing highway construction and set plans for future infrastructure. Their primary goal is finishing these projects on time.
Saha highlighted the growth of the state road network, which expanded from 198 km in 2014 to 923 km by 2026. A major focus of the talks was the four-laning of the 130-km Churaibari-Champaknagar stretch on NH-8. This greenfield project will include tunnels through the Atharamura and Longtharai ranges. Land acquisition begins soon.
The state government pledged to hand over 90 per cent of land for the Ranirbazar-ISBT section by August 2026. Once that is done, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited will seek construction bids. Officials also reviewed the Agartala-Udaipur widening project.
Saha noted the importance of this work due to rising tourism and traffic. "The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 4-laning of the Agartala-Udaipur section of NH-08 is in its final stage, considering the substantial increase in traffic movement, tourism, and pilgrimage activities," Saha said.
The Ministry also committed to developing the 148-km Kamalpur-Ambassa-Gandacherra-Santirbazar road to boost trade and natural gas projects. Meanwhile, the state will redevelop several aging highway stretches, including NH-108B and NH-208, based on safety advice from the Central Road Research Institute. Saha urged for better drainage and retaining walls to stop monsoon flooding and landslides.
