Meghalaya Disaster Teams Mobilize as Monsoon Rains Strike 32 Villages

Shillong: Heavy monsoon rains have slammed 32 villages across Meghalaya. Flash floods and landslides are tearing through the Garo and Khasi Hills. Authorities report damage to local infrastructure, yet no deaths have occurred so far.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma ordered district officials to ramp up surveillance on Saturday. He wants emergency teams on high alert as the India Meteorological Department maintains an orange alert through July 15. The state anticipates more heavy rain.

Disaster response is underway. Sangma pushed for fast coordination between agencies to move rescue gear and relief supplies into hard-hit pockets. "Deputy Commissioners have been asked to closely monitor the situation and submit regular field reports," according to state officials.

Engineers are inspecting the Mineng Bailey Bridge in South Garo Hills. Erosion threatens the approach road, so crews have restricted movement to light vehicles. Workers must finish temporary repairs quickly. Officials warned the public to stay off unstable slopes and avoid flooded rivers during the storm.
