Guwahati: Tigers are making a comeback in Assam. The Nameri Tiger Reserve reported a fourfold jump in its tiger population over the last three years. The count climbed from three tigers in 2022 to 12 by the end of 2025.
The Wildlife Institute of India verified the new numbers. State Forest and Environment Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah shared the news on Friday. He pointed to years of steady forest protection work as the main driver for the growth. "From just three tigers in 2022 to 12 by the end of 2025, Nameri Tiger Reserve has scripted a remarkable conservation success, validated by the Wildlife Institute of India," Baruah said.
The reserve covers a large stretch of land. It includes the 200 square kilometre Nameri National Park and the 120 square kilometre Sonai-Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary. Other areas include the Naduar and Balipara Reserve Forests. The sanctuary serves as the satellite core for the park.
Big cats are moving back into old territory. Two tigers have returned to the Sonai-Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary after a multi-decade absence. This marks a major win for local conservationists working under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
