Three children killed by downed power line in Ri-Bhoi

Shillong: A high-voltage tragedy struck Umtangling village on Wednesday afternoon. Three children died after hitting a snapped 11 kV overhead power line. The incident occurred near 2 pm in the Ri-Bhoi district of Umroi.

The children walked into the live wire while traveling through the village. They died on the spot. Two of the victims were siblings, aged 11 and 12. Bok Nongbsap, the village headman, arrived at the scene quickly. He described the loss of life as "unimaginable."

Nongbsap claims the village repeatedly flagged the danger to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited. Residents complained specifically about a damaged transformer and rotting power lines. MeECL ignored the warnings. They took no action to fix the grid before the children died.
