Shillong: Residents of Mawlyndep village in the Ri-Bhoi district are fed up. They are fighting back against the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited and the state government. The local Dorbar Shnong claims families face high bills and constant power cuts. Daily life for these people has become a struggle.
Rangbah Shnong Jinu Kharbuki says the price hikes make no sense. Many homes use just a few bulbs but get hit with massive charges. "Many households are receiving electricity bills of around Rs 1,000, while some have been billed more than Rs 1,600 despite using only two or three light bulbs," Kharbuki said. Locals took their complaints to the MeECL office. Officials there admitted many meters are broken and provide no real readings.
The village leadership is furious about the lack of communication. Kharbuki wants to know why the utility kept quiet about the defective equipment. He says the department had a duty to warn customers before sending out arbitrary bills. The village now demands that the state and MeECL swap the faulty meters for new ones. They want accurate billing and a steady supply of power immediately.
