Thousands Rally in Tuensang to Demand Justice for Sexual Assault Victim

Kohima: More than 3,000 people gathered at the Tuensang Town Hall on Tuesday to demand immediate legal action for a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly subjected to sexual assault by three individuals in Dimapur. The peaceful demonstration, organized by a coalition of tribal bodies, student unions, and civil society groups, followed a procession from the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf.

Chang Wedoshi Setshang (CWS) President C. Sanglekhumba addressed the crowd, noting that the case represents a systemic failure to protect the vulnerable. He questioned the prevalence of similar crimes that remain hidden, asking, "How many more remain unrevealed?" He urged the public to move past individual apathy and take collective responsibility for the safety of children.

Leadership from the CWS and the Changsao Thangjam Setshang (CTS) confirmed they have already engaged with law enforcement. The groups formally requested that the police file a charge sheet within 60 days, ensure the accused are denied bail, and provide adequate compensation to the survivor. CTS President Thonti highlighted the gravity of the abuse, describing the victim's experience as a profound violation of human rights that caused significant physical and emotional trauma.

Representatives from various organizations, including the United Sangtam Likhum Pumji and the Tikhir Women Association, voiced their solidarity. Speakers called for stricter enforcement of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and urged parents and educators to prioritize safety education. The rally concluded with a collective prayer for the victim and a firm commitment from community leaders to continue pursuing legal accountability for the accused.
