Tea Tribe groups protest employment practices at McLeod Russel

Guwahati: Members of the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association and the Assam Tea Tribes Women Committee staged a large protest in Margherita on Wednesday. The demonstration targeted the management of McLeod Russel over allegations that the company is failing to hire local educated youth from tea garden communities.

The protesters held a five-hour sit-in outside the company advisory office to demand the immediate filling of vacant positions in local tea estates. Participants claimed that the firm frequently retains staff after retirement, a practice that blocks job opportunities for the younger generation. According to the association, this policy exacerbates a growing unemployment crisis that leaves many graduates from the tea tribe communities without work.

Local residents and students warned that the company must change its hiring strategy or face further escalation. The demonstrators maintain that prioritizing local talent is essential to addressing the social and economic struggles currently impacting their youth.
