Guwahati: Heavy commercial vehicles are tearing up rural roads in Kaliabor. Drivers are ditching the toll plaza at Chulung to save money. The bypass traffic has ruined the Hatibandha to Dolapani route and the path through Napuwatharia. Huge potholes now litter the pavement. The roads are barely usable.
Drivers heading from Upper Assam toward North Assam cross the Kolia Bhomora Setu then cut through the Hatibandha-Dolapani route to dodge the toll. The same mess happens in reverse for traffic moving toward Nagaon. Local residents report the situation is dire. They say, "The increased movement of such vehicles has further damaged the road."
Fed up with the destruction, locals built bamboo barricades. They blocked both ends of the Hatibandha-Napuwatharia-Chulung Chariali road. Only local residents can pass through these barriers now. The community wants authorities to fix the broken routes immediately. They also want a permanent end to heavy vehicles using these small roads to skip the toll.
