Guwahati: Dispur Police shot a suspect in the leg during a frantic escape attempt early Saturday. Officers cornered the men near Nagaland House in the Six Mile area of Guwahati. Two suspects, Debojit Deori and Ajay Biswakarma, are in custody following the operation.

The trouble started on July 2. Police acted on a tip about a Maruti Swift Dzire hauling fake cash. They tracked the vehicle down. During the confrontation, Biswakarma took a bullet to his right leg. Medics rushed him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for surgery.

Officers hauled eight bundles of fake Rs 500 notes from a black backpack inside the car. The haul totals Rs 2,56,000 in counterfeit money. Police seized the car and other gear found at the scene.

Investigators believe the pair runs with a bigger network. Deori and Biswakarma call Dhemaji home, but they have a history of moving bad money. The injured suspect threw an accusation at the authorities while in care. He claimed that "certain police personnel were linked to the fake currency trade."

Officials have not commented on that claim. The investigation continues as police hunt for the rest of the gang.
