Agartala: The Supreme Court of India has ordered the State Election Commission of Tripura to conduct long-pending Village Committee elections within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council by September 2026. This ruling follows a writ petition filed by Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Barma, who sought legal intervention after the local polls remained unheld for nearly ten years.

During the court proceedings, the state election authority submitted an affidavit confirming that the election process will commence during the first week of September and conclude by the end of the month. These committees serve as vital grassroots governance institutions for tribal residents, and their prolonged absence has hindered local administrative functions.

Pradyot characterized the court's decision as a milestone for restoring the constitutional rights of the tribal population. Reflecting on the lengthy legal battle, he stated, "The people of the TTAADC have been waiting for 10 years. This is not the victory of any political party, but the victory of the Constitution and the people." He expects that establishing these elected bodies will improve governance and accelerate development throughout the region.
