Guwahati: All Tai Ahom Student Union president Basanta Gogoi hit out at the Sivasagar district administration during a June 29 press conference. He demanded the immediate removal of illegal encroachments surrounding the historic Jamuna water bodies. The group wants these sites cleared before any further beautification proceeds.
Work on the site is already moving forward. A restoration project valued at over Rs 9 crore is currently in progress, an effort Gogoi credited to MLA Akhil Gogoi. Despite the progress, the student leader voiced sharp concerns about the project's priorities. He questioned whether the spending serves the public or just the contractors.
Gogoi accused officials of ignoring the illegal occupation to chase votes. He insists that failing to address land encroachment before construction is a mistake. The union remains firm on its position despite the ongoing project. "ATASU would not compromise on its demand to free the historic Jamuna water bodies from encroachment," Gogoi stated.
The organization offered its full support to the district administration and the MLA if they take concrete action against the squatters. However, the warning remains clear. If the government continues to ignore the land issue, they will face stiff resistance from the union.
